History
The Easton Maryland Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, The Bay Country Chorus, is part of the largest all-male singing organization in the world, with more than 35,000 members in 800 chapters in the United States and Canada. The first organizational meeting was held July 24, 1995, when seven men met to discuss the possibilities of forming a barbershop chapter in Easton. After many meetings and discussions, it was decided to test the area. Through the generosity of Ms Ellen General, Exec. Director of the Historic Avalon Theatre, we were elated to be welcomed to use the theatre as our home. Our next challenge was to find a director. A former director of many champion choruses, Mr. Al Butler was contacted and he accepted the directorship. With two of the biggest challenges out of the way, membership was next. We applied and received our license, and a membership night was held October 23rd. Many new faces came to this affair and the following meetings. By January 1st, 1996, 13 men were on our roster. The chapter enlisted in a program called "Harold Hill", a membership drive initiated by Kenosha, the society's headquarters. The chapter continued to grow, so we were able to request our charter. A Charter Show was presented to the Easton area February 18 at the Talbot County Auditorium. Easton Chapter now had 34 members. The Mid-Atlantic District Convention held in Ocean City Maryland, October 11-13 recognized the Easton Chapter for it's part in the "Harold Hill" program by awarding Easton 4 awards including a gold medal. The Easton Chapter is a non-profit organization that is involved in community projects which help our town and neighborhoods a better place to live in. Barbershop quartets and choruses provide entertainment for businesses, service clubs, and civic gatherings. They bring smiles to shut-in's and at rest homes. This is just a part of the chapters mission statement. Men of all ages are invited to attend our rehearsals held every Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at our home in Miller Hall at Trinity Cathedral.
